A Barnsley family were left disappointed yesterday after having to rearrange a charity fun day at Hillsborough Arena at the eleventh hour.
Darren Roe and Victoria Miller of Bartholomew Street, Wombwell, had arranged for the fun day to be held in the arena’s hall. But less than 24-hours before guests were set to arrive, the venue on Middlewood Road denied all knowledge of a booking ever being made.
“I was distraught, I made the booking over four months ago and I’ve been in constant dialogue with them since.” said 31-year-old Mr Roe. Hillsborough Arena allowed the couple to book the hall for a later time on the same day, but Mr Roe said that the later start caused a variety of problems.
The couple wanted to hold the fun day to raise money for the Newlife Foundation, a charity that helped them purchase a more suitable buggy for their children,one-year-old Emmie and 11-month-old Riley, who both have hydrocephalus.“I had a bouncy castle booked and even a photo-booth, but the later start meant that them and many others had to drop out.”
The condition means that the siblings have a build-up of excess fluid on their brain. This has caused them to have hindered movement amongst other conditions and requires medical equipment to be carried with them at all times.
Even though the fun day raised over £350 for the Newlife Foundation, Mr Roe said that he thought the total could have been much higher if the arena did not make the mistake.
“The staff at Hillsborough Arena were unhelpful and uninterested,” said Mr Roe, ” If all went to plan I feel like we would’ve raised a lot more, but the venue was disgraceful.”
Manager of the Hillsborough Arena, Denise Ward, said, “Given that the family only contacted our office twice, I’m surprised the event went as well as it did.
“Over the years The Arena has helped countless businesses and organisations raise thousands of pounds for charities. We hope that the group raised as much as they could.”
