The logo for the 2017 Special Olympic Games has been unveiled today by the Lord Mayor of Sheffield.

Designed by local businesses Test Creative and Glue, the logo will act as the identity and branding of the national games which will see almost 3000 British athletes compete.

Tom Barker, Creative Director at Test Creative, said: "We are delighted to have been approached by  Special  Olympics  GB to help develop a new website design and logo.

"It is a unique opportunity to work with a fantastic and growing charity over the next two years and to share this special website with all of the patrons, athletes, families and volunteers who will be in attendance at the games and supporting both nationally and internationally.”

The collaboration has also brought praise from Special Olympics GB’s CEO Karen Wallin who has said that they are delighted with creativity, energy and support given from the companies. She urges other Sheffield businesses to get involved:

“It is important to us to work with local companies to bring the games to life from within the city.”

Returning to Sheffield for the first time in 23 years, the national games will take place from the 7-11 August 2017, it will celebrate athletes with learning disabilities and allow them to realise their true potential.

Events will take place at several venues across the city, with an opening ceremony at Bramall Lane on the 8th August.

Michelle Guite from Millhouses in Sheffield is the mother of gold-medal winning Special Olympian Niall Guite, she said that the games mean a phenomenal amount to those involved and they have boosted her 21-year-old son’s confidence.

“For Sheffield to get behind the event would be brilliant. Niall has Global Developmental Delay which affects his communication and gives him anxiety, these games have given him a positive outlook on life.

“They have given him the freedom to be himself, he has made new friends and now has massive focus. He even trains every day. By representing Team GB he’s become a proud young man and is part of the only British team to ever win gold in basketball.”

Leader of Sheffield City Council, Councillor Julie Dore said she is honoured that Sheffield had been chosen to host the games.

"The decision is testament to the fact that Sheffield is a great sporting city, home to the sort of world-leading venues that befit a highly prestigious event such as this.

“'Sheffielders' are well known for their love of sport, in what is our welcoming and inclusive city. This is another opportunity to get involved in a wonderful celebration of all things sporting.  We estimate the economic benefit hosting the games in Sheffield will be in the region of £1.5m."
