Bosses of Sheffield’s Tramlines Festival have announced that the location of their main stage is set to move to Ponderosa Park in Netherthorpe, a 15 minute walk away from its usual home at Devonshire Green.
The move comes after organisers received feedback from last year’s festival-goers, with many of them saying they missed out on watching the top of the bill acts due to Devonshire Green’s limited capacity.
Katie Hewitt, part of the booking team at Tramlines festival, said that the change of location would leave more than enough room for the record number of attendees expected this year, but would not leave the city centre feeling left out.
“The move to Ponderosa Park will allow Tramlines to welcome more guests than ever before, but don’t think just because we’re moving the main stage that Sheffield centre will be deserted -we do have 17 venues after all!”
One of these venues is the Frog and Parrot on Division Street , where landlord and manager Nick Simmonite has been left scratching his head at the decision.
“Isn’t it supposed to be an urban festival?” said Mr Simmonite, “Moving it to a park sort of defeats the object!”
Although the landlord appreciates that the move was part of a commercial decision to maximise profit, the sudden announcement has left him questioning how much money he is willing to pay for his venue’s line-up this year.
“Tramlines always took place on our quietest weekend of the year; it used to help us balance the books.
“We can’t afford to be spending a fortune on a stellar line-up like we have in previous years. Especially if there’s no chance we’ll ever get that money back! The last thing we need is to make a loss, there’s been a lot of bars close around here and we don’t want to be one of them!”
Tramlines Festival 2015 will see The Charlatans, Basement Jaxx and Wu-Tang Clan top the bill; with other big names such as The Buzzcocks, Martha Reeves and Kate Tempest joining the 200 strong line-up who will play at venues all over the city.
Weekend tickets are now on sale for £30 with under 12s going free. See www.tramlines.org.uk for more details.
