Dicky Tickers handing their cheque to Macmillan's Rob Turner |
Members of Dicky Tickers Heart Support Group have raised
over £2000 for Macmillan Cancer Care’s Chesterfield Appeal.
The Clay Cross-based-group have been taking part in a
variety of fundraising activities and
even held a sponsored static bike ride which saw some of the group’s 160
members cycle the equivalent distance of riding from Chesterfield to Barcelona.
Ex-chairman of the group and governor at Chesterfield Royal
Hospital, John Wardle, 84, of Brown Lane, Militown said, “The best part of the
miles event was that we only needed to cover the distance it would take to get
to Paris. We went an extra 650 miles just for Macmillan.”
Formerly known as
‘The Cardiac Rehabilitation and Social Activities Club’, the Dicky Tickers meet
three times a week at Sharley Park Leisure Centre to do a variety of light
exercise sessions to help those with heart problems with their rehabilitation.
“The group was not even a year old before we had a
competition to change our name. We all
got tired of saying never mind trying to spell the old one – I suggested Dicky
Tickers and that is what we have been known as for the past 15 years.”
“Our membership numbers are constantly growing and this is
why we always end up raising and beating our fundraising targets each year.”
With several of Dicky Tickers’ members, including John,
having battled both heart problems and cancer, the group know just how much a
new state-of-the-art centre would benefit the local area.
John said: “I have had Melanoma and my daughter is battling
cancer too, I know how much of a difference this new centre will make, it will
mean less travelling, less stress and more time to do the things that really
matter.
“I know that times
are tough and finances are strained but I would ask individuals, businesses and
voluntary groups to help contribute. After all, cancer, like heart problems,
will affect one in every three of us in our lifetime.”
